Chargers Soccer Club Graduates Two Valedictorians and a Salutatorian on Same Team

The Chargers Soccer Club recently held one of it's community's annual banquet and recognized graduating seniors who played competitive soccer with the club.  The Clearwater Under 18 Boys Select Team presented a very impressive graduating class including Two Valedictorians and one Salutatorian.  The Chargers Director of Coaching Peter Mannino commented that it was rare to have one Valedictorian or Salutatorian on such a competitive team, let alone three on the same team and four in the same club.

The Clearwater based team had 19 players representing seven local high schools.  In addition to individually playing for their own high schools, this team represented the Chargers Soccer Club in the Club Directors League and National Premier League, both highly competitive regional and statewide leagues respectively.  The team’s average Grade Point Average was 4.05 (on a 4.0 scale) with ten players well above a 4.0.  The team, which consistently ranked in the top ten in the State, included eight players selected to the Pinellas AllStar Team for High School Soccer.

Alex Lewis, the team’s head coach, recognized each of the players at the annual banquet and said “this is a special team” and thanked the team for the opportunity to have coached them for four years.  He also commented on the longevity of the team itself with more than half the team playing together for over six years.

Lewis took the team over from Sergei Stopek who coached the team since the Under 9 through Under 15 age group.  Stopek, who now coaches other Chargers teams, joined the team at the banquet and presented a tearful tribute to the players and families gathered.  He said “you demand a lot of yourself but more importantly, you demand a lot of each other both on and off the field.”

The two Valedictorians are Kyle Howarth and Ricky Callum.  The Salutatorian is Will Moorhead.

Howarth, a Co-Captain of this team and his High School soccer team, is graduating with a 4.97 GPA (the highest in Pinellas County) from East Lake High School’s Engineering Academy.  Howarth, one of the original members of the team was selected to the Pinellas County All Star team for soccer and also received numerous accolades for football as the leading field goal kicker in the State for the regular season of High School Football.  Howarth will be attending the University of Florida to study Engineering.

Callum is graduating with a 4.88 GPA from Palm Harbor University High School, participated in the school’s Medical Magnet program, and qualified twice for the Health Occupations for Students of America state competitions.  He plans to also attend the University of Florida and study Biology.

Moorhead, another original member of the team, graduates with a 4.62 GPA from Clearwater Central Catholic High School's International Baccalaureate (IB) program.  He was Student Body President, Captain of his High School team and will attend the US Military Academy at West Point.

The Chargers Soccer Club also acknowledged Peter DiNapoli who graduated as Salutatorian with a 4.84 GPA from Palm Harbor University.  DiNapoli, who played with the team in earlier years, was a member of the Charger’s U.S. Soccer Development Academy (USSDA) team since 2013 and will attend the University of Florida.

Kyle’s father, Steve Howarth, was the U18 Select team’s manager for ten years.  Howarth, who was also recognized and thanked at the banquet for his work with the team, commented on the bond this team had.  He said, “This was truly a special group of players, coaches, and parents.  No thank you’s are necessary.  I have truly enjoyed every minute watching these boys develop as good soccer players but even greater young men.”

Other members of the U18 Select team include: Dario Gentilesco, Hayden Grooms, Jon Hansen, Alec Harris, Griffin Harris, Matt Havican, Tanner Kimball, Matias Mirabilio, Kyle Patrick, David Sanford, Brent Sharp, Cesar Sotomayor, Zach Suhoza, Ryan Wilt, Niko Xenakis, and Garrit Dubois.
