We’re proud to share that Zac MacMath, former Chargers player and 15-year MLS veteran goalkeeper, has announced his retirement from Major League Soccer — and returned home to the Chargers Soccer Club!
Zac MacMath, a former Chargers player on Pete Mannino and Matt King’s 2006 U14 State Championship team, has announced his retirement from Major League Soccer after a 15-year career. MacMath a St. Petersburg native, was a 5th overall draft pick of the Philadelphia Union in the 2011 MLS Super Draft.
He has spent the past six seasons with the Real Salt Lake, with stops at Vancouver Whitecaps and Colorado Rapids. Overall, he has made 240 appearances, 238 starts, played 21,443 minutes, with 67 shutouts and 709 saves. Twice in his career he played every minute of every game in a season, 3,060 minutes, 2013 with Philadelphia Union, 2023 with Real Salt Lake. His community involvement, resulted in winning three team Humanitarian of the year awards, two with Colorado Rapids, one with Real Salt Lake.
Prior to his professional career, he spent 3 years at Maryland, winning 2007 National Championship and 2007 and 2010 ACC Championships. As a junior in 2010 was named First Team All American and All ACC Selection. Holds Maryland records for shutouts in season 15(2010) and career 34, and goals against average in season .44 (2008) and career, .64.
MacMath was named to many national teams as an amateur.
· His selection for U15, 17, 18, 20, 23 National teams for international play took him to over 25 countries.
· Impressed with his play at 2005 Nike Friendlies with the U15 National team, was invited to train with U17 team, while a freshman at St. Petersburg High School.
· Joined the United States National Team residency program in 2006. Competed with the U17 team at the 2007 FIFA World Cup
· Played with the U18 National team winning the 2009 Australian Youth Olympic Championship,
· Played with U20 National team winning the 2010 Milk Cup in Northern Ireland.
· Toured with U23 national team in China at 18.
· Played with the USA Maccabi team at the 18th Maccabi Games in Israel.
MacMath is currently assisting Pete Mannino with the 2018 Chargers boys’ team and Kevin Clinton with training Charger goalkeepers. He has a Master’s degree in Sports Management and holds a US Soccer Pro B License.
